18th Annual Protest at Army School

On Sunday November 18, 2007, about 10,000 people came out to participate in the 18th annual protest against the School of Americas, also known as the school of assassins. The protestors demanded the closure of the school, as massive crowds gathered at the school’s gate in Columbus, Georgia. The 18th annual protest of the school at Fort Benning brought Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich. In his address to the crowd, Kucinich said that “the thinking that went into producing an Army school blamed for human rights abuses in Latin America was the same that led the U.S. to war in Iraq and could cause it to raid Iran.” Kucinich also said that if elected as president of the US, he would immediately close the school that trains Latin American soldiers, police and government officials.
The 18th annual protest also coincided with the anniversary of the six Jesuit priests who were killed along with their housekeeper and her daughter in El Salvador on November 19th, 1989. All throughout Latin America, many religious people and civilians were victims of repression and mass killings from some of the soldiers and police men who attended the School of the Americas.
