Ruben Navarro, a 25 year old terminally ill patient and potential organ donor who had been unconscious, stopped breathing on his own on January 29, 2006. He was put on a respirator, but February 3, Dr. Roozrokh's staff removed the respirator - claiming that this was hospital policy after a patient receives 5 days of life support without signs of recovery. When Ruben continued to live, Dr. Roozrokh is charged with attempting to induce "cardiac death". After reportedly telling his nurses, "Let's just give him some more candy," Dr. Roozrokh had high doses of morphine and Ativan administered to Ruben. Ruben's heart continued to beat, yet his organs were deemed unusable and he died several hours later.
